“I survived because they ran out of gas.”

Judy Weissenberg Cohen

Born

Debrecen, Hungary, 1928

Born into a large Hungarian Jewish family before WW2 began, Judy first felt the danger of the Nazis as her father’s business was closed.

Her brothers were conscripted as slave labour into Germany’s war. And she was eventually sent to Auschwitz. Fate intervened on many occasions. She narrowly avoided the gas chambers and escaped death at the hands of the notorious Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele.

“If it happened in Germany, the centre of intelligentsia, then it could happen anywhere. It can happen in Canada, too.”

“It can happen in any country if we allow it to happen. If kids can recognize that something is happening, then they can do something about it.”
