EXPLORE MORE OF HIS STORY

"I cried uncontrollably for months."

Gershon Willinger

Born

Amsterdam, Holland, 1942

Gershon was born in 1942 into a family living under Nazi occupation in the Netherlands.

Recognizing the life-threatening danger for Jewish people, his family sent him to live with non-Jews. Shortly after, Gershon’s mother and father were killed in Sobibor extermination camp, a fate he escaped. He doesn’t remember much because he was just a small child, but he cried uncontrollably for weeks once liberated and was described as a wild animal.

“Don’t be complacent. Be aware of what’s happening in society.”

“If the Holocaust could happen in the country of all the philosophers, it could happen anywhere. We need to teach our youth to care, learn and feel.”
